On the 4th of December, Island Aviation proudly collaborated with Manta Watch New Zealand for the first aerial survey of Manta Rays in the Hauraki Gulf.
A team of 8 observers, media and sponsors left from Claris (Great Barrier Island) to survey the Eastern Hauraki Gulf up to the Poor Knight Islands from the air. We were able to spot and document an incredible 18 Manta Rays as well as large whales and a large number of dolphins from the air.

This was the second such project for Island Aviation in 2024, following assisting the BBC Blue Planet team earlier in the year in their search for whales along the East Coast of Auckland and Northland.

Our twin engine aircrafts are the perfect platform for extended and low-level surveys combining safety with good visibility and endurance. In 2025 we have a large project booked, as part of an international collaboration, to look for a different species of marine life planned over the course of two weeks in March.
Of course, you can spot many of these amazing animals on our daily scenic flights from North Shore to Claris, or Okiwi.
Our twin engine aircraft can safely operate at altitudes of 1500-2500 feet, less than half the height of other airlines, from which the work ups, marine life and boat traffic are easily observed. In fact on the afternoon flight last week, we could witness a large whale blowing air, a short distance West of Aotea.
