Surveys and Special Missions

Island Aviation operates a fleet of single and twin-engine aircraft, which are the perfect platforms for aerial observations over land and sea or filming projects.

The bird’s eye view

Over the last 10 years we have completed a variety of assignments, some for global TV networks capturing our amazing environment, visiting volcanoes around our beautiful Aotearoa, New Zealand, others included important tasks to support communities and wildlife.

Special missions
We have also successfully completed flights on specified tracks. These special missions were arranged to cover large areas of ocean to spot, identify and record marine life from Manta Rays to dolphins and whales.

Other missions saw us carry crews on-board who documented and collected pollution or searched for missing boats and crew members.

We have worked for private individuals, networks and companies, domestic and international NGOs and various New Zealand government agencies.

The gear to get it done

Our single engine Cessna aircraft can accommodate up to 3 observers and with our long-range fuel tanks we can provide a very efficient platform for aerial surveys over land or near-shore.

Our twin engine Britten Norman Islanders aircraft are equipped with bubble windows for a wider observation area and can accommodate up to 8 observers and their equipment. The aircraft can fly at low altitude and at slow airspeeds to ensure that an initial observation can be confirmed and recorded. With twin engine safety they are the ideal platform for surveys further off-shore.

All our aircraft are high-wing, enabling better visibility of the ground below.
